Bursaries can play an important part in university activities for students from lower income backgrounds, and, used effectively, they can have a more wide ranging impact by helping to drive attainment and encourage retention among these students.

-Remove some of the financial burden for talented young people from less advantaged backgrounds

-Reduce the need for students to get paid work alongside their studies which can encourage retention
