Story

Daisyhouse is a small charity, based in Dublin, that works to support women out of homelessness. Acting as a guardian for homeless individuals for 30 years, Daisyhouse has accommodated those people that society may have left behind.

Women become homeless for a whole myriad of reasons. These can include- experiences of poverty and deprivation during childhood; histories of State care; experiences of domestic violence and/or child sexual abuse; parental and personal substance use; and gender-based violence right throughout their lives. Sadly, its normally a combination of these horrific traumas.

I was homeless through domestic violence, poverty and addiction. When I was homeless, I felt less than a human being. I slept in broken down cars, stairways and parks. I have experienced hopelessness on an unimaginable scale. I remember sitting in doorways, cold, hungry and very alone. I watched people go by me knowing where they were going and had homes to go to, just passing me by. I was very vulnerable and scared especially being a woman homeless. I was in fear constantly of being raped and abused. I came to Daisyhouse a very broken young women with a lot of trauma. For the first time in my life, I felt safe. it was a new experience. I then began to grow as a person with encouragement from the staff. I discovered my self-worth. Thanks to Daisyhouse I am now in college, achieving my dreams and gaining the ability to stand on my own two feet. I now feel like I am a contributing member of society and am so excited for the future I never believed I could have.

There is a lack of female appropriate services for homeless women in Ireland with women now represent 41% of the homeless population in Ireland. However, Daisyhouse is doing its bit to ensure that women are valued, listened to and supported to move out of homelessness and achieve their life aspirations. Daisyhouse provides temporary accommodation where women can feel safe whilst completing an 18-month individually tailored program to empower them to rebuild their lives. They learn how to set boundaries and move away from their past addictions.

Daisyhouse clients are:

Empowered to do more for themselves.

Encouraged to examine and address the issues which may have contributed to their homelessness.

Helped to develop their capacity to live independently in the future so that when they are housed on a long-term basis, they will need little or no support.

But we need your support to ensure Daisyhouse can continue to provide this important service. If you could take a little time out of all the shopping this Black Friday weekend to workout live with Vogue Williams on Instagram. Whilst making a small donation on the button above.

About the charity

Women become homeless for many reasons including addiction, domestic violence, abuse, ill health... When this happens, they need a ‘space’ where they can recover from the trauma of their experience, feel safe and secure and, in time, move forward in their lives. Daisyhouse provides such a space.
