Story
The Diocese of Leeds Youth Service are organising a group of young people aged 15-30 to attend World Youth Day Lisbon from 31st July-7th August 2023.
World Youth Day is a worldwide gathering of young people with the Pope for a week-long youth festival of fun, prayer and community! Created by Pope John Paul II in 1984, World Youth Day (WYD) takes place every 2-4 years in different countries around the world; with hundreds of thousands, and sometimes even millions, of young people coming together on pilgrimage for a celebration of youth.
WYD offers young people the opportunity to pray, celebrate, meet young people from other countries, learn about different cultures and experience the sense of the Universal Church.
Ryan, the Youth Formation Officer for the Diocese of Leeds, attended World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland in 2016 and shared this about his experience:
Going to World Youth Day was life changing for me, being with millions of young people from around the world and experiencing faith in a new way was a truly inspiring experience. From walking through the streets of a major city, singing and chanting, to experiencing Mass with Pope Francis amongst millions of young people and finding a sense of Gods presence and peace World Youth Day is an experience like no other! It truly changed my life and helped me to discern the next steps of my faith journey, leading to me becoming a Catholic.
Getting to World Youth Day can be expensive, especially in the current climate, and many young people would not be able to afford this experience without financial support and fundraising. Could you help young people in our diocese to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity?!
