Story

Pakistan Floods: More than 33 million people have been affected

Extremely heavy rainfall in Pakistan has resulted in catastrophic flash flooding leaving one-third of the country underwater.

According to local authorities the death toll has surpassed 1,300, with over 12,500 injured and millions displaced.

Described as a climate catastrophe by the UN Secretary General, the floods have left over 6 million people in urgent need of humanitarian aid.

Many parts of Pakistan have become inaccessible, and rescuers are struggling to evacuate thousands of stranded people from affected areas. Balochistan and Sindh provinces are the hardest hit areas.

The Yorkshire County Cricket Council (YCCC) is fundraising for Islamic Relief who are responding on the ground now, providing vital humanitarian aid.

Update on Pakistan Floods response

Islamic Relief UK Director, Tufail Hussain, sends us this update from Sindh. Teams in Sindh are distributing vital aid such as tents, food packs, drinking water, cash grants and kitchen sets in Karachi, Malir, Mirpur Khas and Thatta.

YCCC are looking forward to supporting Islamic Relief, who are not only one of the UK Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) charities but are already on the ground providing life-saving aid.

Over 220,000 homes have been destroyed

A staggering 33 million people have been badly affected by the flooding according to local government, while the Pakistan's disaster agency has said nearly 220,000 homes were destroyed and half a million more badly damaged.

In Sindh alone over 2 million acres of cultivated crops had been wiped out. The local communities are heavily reliant on their crop to feed themselves.

Without access to urgent medical aid, food, clean water, and adequate shelter, those who have fled to higher ground will be at even more risk.

Islamic Relief emergency teams are on the ground right now, working in local communities to establish how best to support affected families, who urgently need food, shelter, bedding, and hygiene items.

The teams responses include providing cash grants to 3,000 families in 3 regions of Balochistan, which they can use as they wish to cover their most essential needs and they are also working with the local government to support relief efforts.

Islamic Relief is also focused on helping communities recover from the disaster as quickly as possible to ensure that vulnerable people do not continue to suffer the terrifying impact of the flash floods.

As the situation deteriorates, we desperately need to respond to meet the ongoing and immediate needs of those who have been affected.

This fundraising campaign will conclude on 10th October with YCCC hosting a charity dinner at the Headingly Stadium.
