Can you help us cover the costs of 15-year-old Zac's emergency stomach surgery?
Zac, a 15-year-old German Shepherd cross was rushed into surgery on the evening of Sunday 7th February after our vigilant Animal Care team noticed he was acting out of character and trying to vomit unsuccessfully...
Zac was originally brought to our Centre via the RSPCA inspectors with a severe hair loss and skin problem that was left untreated in his previous home. Due to Zac's skin problems, he often wriggles around on the floor to itch his back bless him. But on the evening of the 7th February, our staff noticed Zac was wriggling more than usual and took him out of his kennel to see if he was okay.
Zac had a swollen stomach which is often a sign of 'bloat' - a very severe condition that needs immediate attention. Zac was rushed to the vets who confirmed that he was indeed suffering from bloat (also known as a twisted stomach or GDV-Gastro Dilatation Volvulus) which required immediate surgery.
During Zac's 2 hour long operation, the veterinary team found parts of an old tennis ball stuck in his stomach too.... poor Zac. The vets concluded that with all of Zac's wriggling, along with the tennis ball remnants, this will have ultimately led to his bloat problem.
The total cost of Zac's stomach surgery was a staggering £2,885. This has been a huge, unexpected cost to our branch, especially after the past year of lockdowns which saw our Charity shops close and fundraising events cancelled.
We understood of course, that the surgery could have been a risk with an elderly dog. However, at the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & Bradford Branch we believe in doing all we can for any animal in need, no matter what .... and Zac was absolutely no exception!
We're so proud that our incredible team spotted Zac's discomfort so quickly and that the fantastic veterinary professionals made Zacs operation a success, which ultimately saved this gorgeous boys life. But this unexpected surgery has put a significant strain on our Animal Centre funds - particularly when our funding resources are already under pressure due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
For this reason, we're calling on our supporters for help! Would you be able to make a donation to help us cover the cost of Zac's emergency surgery? Any contribution, however big or small, will help us recover the funds spent on Zacs operation and ongoing recovery.
Wed like to say a huge thank you to you all in advance. Zac spent 3 days recuperating at the vets after his surgery and is now back in our care while he fully recovers. We will be sharing updates about Zacs progress and please note, he will not be available for adoption until he's made a full recovery which we hope wont be too long!
Thank you so much.
