A-B Walk: Make a Move for Angel Shed

Campaign by Angel Shed Theatre

Angel Shed believe that access to the arts should never be a privilege reserved for the few.  That's why in June, our dedicated staff and volunteer team walked the length of Islington to raise funds for access support for our members.

Angel Shed is a charity in Islington, North London, specialising in inclusive performing arts for children and young people. We provide a safe space for children to express themselves, develop confidence, and grow into curious, creative, and courageous young people.

Story

Thank you to those who have supported our walk so far!

The percentage of Angel Shed's membership who are Disabled has risen from 26% to 63% in the past three years. We want to hire additional Access Support Workers next year so that we can welcome more of the Disabled children and young people currently on our waiting lists to Angel Shed.

Thanks to the extraordinary commitment of our staff team, facilitators, Access Support Workers and volunteers, we are able to adapt to the needs of Disabled members and support them to participate in the performing arts in a way that works for them.

On the 13th June, our staff and volunteer team took part in an A-B Fundraising Walk, walking the length of the borough of Islington from Archway to Barbican, and raising funds to go directly towards our Access Support Workers who support Angel Shed participants with high support needs.

The majority of Angel Shed members live in the most deprived wards in Islington. Many of our members and their families therefore experience being Disabled, alongside the added pressures of the cost of living crisis.

While Angel Shed offers pay-what-you-can places in our weekly performing arts sessions, the addition of 1:1 access support can transform the confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing of children and young people who elsewhere are often unable to access safe, inclusive, creative spaces.

“Our experience at Angel Shed has been brilliant. Provisions are already scarce but this is the first time we have found something that she loves. And she really loves it. The 1:1 support is amazing. The staff are just so brilliant at making her feel included and welcome and like a regular teenage girl.” Parent of member

The demand for spaces like Angel Shed is only increasing, while our resources remain limited. Even small contributions are appreciated, but if you can give more, here is the difference you can make:

£40 - you can provide a Disabled young person with 1:1 support for one performing arts session

£400 - you can provide a Disabled young person with 1:1 support for a whole term

We truly appreciate any support!
