WHY OUR WORK IS NEEDED
The Problem
• Tennis has a reputation as exclusive: requiring club access, coaching fees, equipment, and confidence to join.
• Participation remains racially and economically skewed.
o Only 4% of people from ethnic minority backgrounds play tennis regularly.
o But 10% say they’d like to.
• Children in our boroughs face layered disadvantages:
o 38% of children in Islington live in poverty.
o 41% of Year 6 pupils in Hackney are overweight or obese.
o Hackney ranks 10th nationally for income deprivation among children and older people.
