Story

Cross High School needs your help! The school is in need of brass instruments, clarinets, and saxophones to replace aged and unrepairable instruments, reduce sharing, and allow additional students to participate.

Here in the Cross High School band program, the shy students find their voice through music! Hailing from the BIG town of Cross, SC, our school has a unique population with middle and high school students in one building. This is a reflection of our band program as well! As a small school in a small town, we are a school of the community standing on the shoulders of a rich history and legacy of phenomenal musicians! Our School chants with pride, "We Bleed Blue", and our band is the heartbeat pumping the blue blood through our veins. We have performed at various events aside from our football games such as Volvo’s unveiling of their EX90, their first electric car, Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic basketball tournament, band competitions, and countless other events. One challenge we have faced during our performances is playing on quality instruments. - Mrs. Nelson, Director of Bands

Our band is in dire need of new instruments as most of the instruments we have now are of poor quality. They break easily resulting in using quick-fix methods, such as electric tape and ace bandaging, to seal air leaks. Others were purchased as a need but were very inexpensive resulting in poor quality so they eventually need repair due to wear and tear. Unfortunately, some of the repairs cost more than the instrument. Lastly, many of our instruments have been around for a long time! I have the honor of teaching at the school family my age graduated from. To hear them say, “I played that when I was here”, and that was at least 20 years ago speaks volumes. - Mrs. Nelson, Director of Bands

With generous and transformative support from Eddie Van Halen over the years and now continuing through his son Wolfgang, The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation is pleased to announce that the Van Halen Family has committed to kickstarting the Adopt A School campaign with a generous $1,000 donation towards each of the first 100 participating schools.

Schools participating in the Adopt A School campaign are qualified through MHOF’s vetting and eligibility process, giving donors confidence that their investment is protected and sustainable, impacting students for a minimum of 10 years (the lifespan of an instrument in a school setting.) Donations made to this school’s fundraising campaign go directly to The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation (MHOF). MHOF then purchases the specific instruments the school is in need of at a substantially discounted price and the instruments deliver directly to the school.

Donate today and help these students foster their love of music, every dollar counts!
