Support Elementary School Music Classes at Kinsey Inquiry and Discovery School in Flagstaff, Arizona
At Kinsey Inquiry and Discovery School in Flagstaff, the K-5 music program is more than just a class, it’s a place where students find community. It is a special place among elementary schools in the district as more than half of the student body are Native American and 65% are economically disadvantaged.
For these children, learning music provides a rare outlet—a place they can experience the joy of aspiring to a goal and achieving it. After his elementary students put in months of work preparing for their Veterans Day concert, Mr. Busby said they paused to reflect on their progress.
They share their improvements with so much pride and understand that they put in the work and are reaping the rewards. For some of our students, music is one outlet that truly allows them to feel that pride and excitement. In describing our music program, the words that come to mind are community, family, caring, and growth. Our students utilize this space to to grow as individuals, find a place within a community, and make lasting connections and memories.” Mr. Busby
Ensuring access to that opportunity has long been a struggle for Kinsey’s music program. They have twice as many students who want to participate as they have working instruments, so everyone has to share. There are only enough recorders for half the fourth grade class, so the rest of the class is on ukuleles. Today, the music program is running on a budget under $500 a year, so there is little to no money to purchase new instruments.

Your donation goes to Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, allowing the foundation to work with the Kinsey Inquiry and Discovery School’s music teacher to purchase the school’s needed instruments. Instruments are then delivered directly to the school.

How your donation works:
Your cash donation goes directly to Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation to help purchase the instruments each school needs at deeply discounted rates (typically one-third of retail price). Instruments are delivered directly to the school; no cash is given to schools. A 5% service fee is retained by JustGiving, and the Foundation retains 10% to cover administrative costs, including school vetting and grant management.
With generous and transformative support from Eddie Van Halen over the years and now continuing through his son Wolfgang, Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation is pleased to announce that the Van Halen Family has committed to kickstarting the Adopt A School campaign with a generous $1,000 donation towards each of the first 100 participating schools.
How we select schools:
Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation identifies schools through a combination of outreach and research, focusing on those that meet specific grant eligibility requirements. Once a school is determined to be eligible, the music teacher is invited to complete a detailed grant application and participate in an in-person or virtual site visit. This process helps the Foundation understand the school’s unique needs and ensures that any donation will result in a sustainable, long-term impact on students’ access to music education.
