Story

With generous and transformative support from Eddie Van Halen over the years and now continuing through his son Wolfgang, The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation is pleased to announce that the Van Halen Family has committed to kickstarting the Adopt A School campaign with a generous $1,000 donation towards each of the first 100 participating schools.

The Sunrise Mountain High School band orchestra, marching band, jazz, and mariachi programs need your help! Trumpets, alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, baritone saxophones, snare drums, timpani, clarinets, marimba, mallets, sticks, guitars, microphones, sound systems, violins, vihuelas, guitarron, violas, cellos, basses, instrument cases, travel music stands and tuners are needed to allow additional students to enroll in the programs.

"Many of our students at Sunrise Mountain experience challenges outside of school that limit their experiences. Students can not afford to attend concerts, travel, purchase their own instruments, or take private lessons. 98% of all students participating in performing arts at Sunrise Mountain High School use school-owned instruments. With our growing programs, we are currently unable to keep up with the enrollment due to our lack of instruments. Students are being turned away from our programs because there are no instruments for them to use. It is our goal to be able to provide music education for all students and help every student that walks through our doors." - Angela Berens, Band Director

Sunrise Mountain High School has a very special connection to MHOF. The school’s mariachi teacher, John Vargas, was able to participate in music class as a high school student at Woodrow Wilson High School in Los Angeles in 1998 by borrowing a school trumpet that was donated by MHOF. He is now passing that gift on to his students every day as a music educator.

Schools participating in the Adopt A School campaign are qualified through MHOF’s vetting and eligibility process, giving donors confidence that their investment is protected and sustainable, impacting students for a minimum of 10 years (the lifespan of an instrument in a school setting.) Donations made to this school’s fundraising campaign go directly to The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation (MHOF). MHOF then purchases the specific instruments the school is in need of at a substantially discounted price and the instruments deliver directly to the school.

Donate today and help these students foster their love of music!
