Story

The music program at Integrated Arts Academy at H.O. Wheeler needs your help! The program is in need of guitars, keyboards, electric basses, electric guitars, midi controllers and microphones to provide appropriate sized instruments, allow additional students to participate, and reduce sharing.

At IAA, music is essential to all learning. Students learn and grow through arts integration, a way of teaching where two content areas, like music and literacy, are given equal focus for units. This can look like students learning about figurative language through rapping or making connections between rhythm notation and fractions. Students who are below grade level with their literacy skills, for example, become so excited and engaged when they know they'll be rapping their final draft. An instrument donation would be a boon to this learning model. -Mr. Benton, Music Teacher

Currently, students need to share instruments, taking turns at the keyboard or with the guitars. Often the guitars are too big for young students. With more instruments, students can choose their preferred instrument and dedicate practice time to mastering skills and achieving their personal goals. With more microphones and MIDI controllers, students can produce their own music without being rushed to share with another student. -Mr. Benton, Music Teacher

With generous and transformative support from Eddie Van Halen over the years and now continuing through his son Wolfgang, The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation is pleased to announce that the Van Halen Family has committed to kickstarting the Adopt A School campaign with a generous $1,000 donation towards each of the first 100 participating schools.

Schools participating in the Adopt A School campaign are qualified through MHOF’s vetting and eligibility process, giving donors confidence that their investment is protected and sustainable, impacting students for a minimum of 10 years (the lifespan of an instrument in a school setting.) Donations made to this school’s fundraising campaign go directly to The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation (MHOF). MHOF then purchases the specific instruments the school is in need of at a substantially discounted price and the instruments deliver directly to the school.

Donate today and help these students foster their love of music, every dollar counts!
