Story
Whittier Elementary School's music programs need your help! The programs are in need of xylophones, double basses, celli, violins, alto saxophones, and clarinets to reduce sharing, allow additional students to participate, and replace aged instruments that are beyond repair.
Whittier Elementary is a unique school in the heart of downtown Boise. Our community is a mix of students from many countries and cultures. We host the dual language program in which students are instructed in English half a day and Spanish the other half. The general music classroom serves over 450 students each week. A few years ago there were only a small number of instruments to enrich their music experience. After sharing with my students my dream of having a set of World Drums for our school, they surprised me with a check for $500 for our first drums! They had organized a secret fundraiser to surprise me! They inspired me! Since then, we have added to our drums each year, and the students always have biggest smiles and happiest demeanors when they get to start our day with drumming. Our next pressing need is for a greater quantity of pitched percussion instruments so that we have a class set. This would give our students more playing time, and provide enough instruments for performances. -Ms. Stom, General Music
With generous and transformative support from Eddie Van Halen over the years and now continuing through his son Wolfgang, The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation is pleased to announce that the Van Halen Family has committed to kickstarting the Adopt A School campaign with a generous $1,000 donation towards each of the first 100 participating schools.
Schools participating in the Adopt A School campaign are qualified through MHOF’s vetting and eligibility process, giving donors confidence that their investment is protected and sustainable, impacting students for a minimum of 10 years (the lifespan of an instrument in a school setting.) Donations made to this school’s fundraising campaign go directly to The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation (MHOF). MHOF then purchases the specific instruments the school is in need of at a substantially discounted price and the instruments deliver directly to the school.
