For the last few weeks in March and April 2025, we’ve had the pleasure of living and working at the ASSETS Children’s Home in Killinochi in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka - a town that was one of the final battlegrounds for the 26 year long Sri Lankan civil war that ended in 2009.

ASSETS is a registered organization primarily funded by the Arobanam Children Fund. It is a care home to 50 boys with varying intellectual, physical and developmental disabilities. Many of these children are parentless, unwanted, or unable to be cared for by their families. At ASSETS the children are housed, fed well, given a safe space to sleep and grow and so much more. They are encouraged to be curious, to learn compassion and to take shared responsibility for one another. They play, dance, sing and are made to feel like they truly belong here.

But it’s by no means an easy feat. Most days the children are surviving but thanks to the incredible staff here (who are sorely overworked) every effort is made to help the children thrive.

While we have spent our time assessing children, developing respective speech path and physio programs, training staff and creating resources to remain long after we’re gone, we’ve also put together a report of recommendations. This includes a new wheelchair, walker, ramps for accessibility, toys for imaginative and sensory play and picture books (of which they have almost none). We believe any extra funds raised should be put towards staff enhancement and/or appreciation.
