The Africa Centre understands the urgency of establishing an inclusive environment that delivers resources to challenge preconceptions surrounding the continent and the diaspora. The valuable contributions of Africa and its extensive diaspora to the past, present and future need to be fully understood and celebrated.
Our Education and Learning opportunities will be initially be fully digitised, delivered in an online learning environment. Our aim is to also deliver a physical space for education from Autumn 2022. It will be a Global Classroom, connecting schoolchildren and students in the UK to their peers worldwide.
The Africa Centre will deliver engaging and interactive education and learning opportunities for adults and children covering subjects such as:
- History across the continent and the diaspora exploring the rich and colourful history across Africa and how the continent has influenced creativity and innovation across the globe
- Britain's colonial past. We will be bold with our messaging and explore the barriers black people face around the world and how we break these down.
- Diversity and inclusivity in communities, education and the workplace. Talking openly and transparently around racial injustice, encouraging discussion from different viewpoints
- Innovation and Invention across the continent and the diaspora
- Arts & Culture: explore the richness and depth of music, art, literature, fashion, dance, drama, film, textiles, from the continent
- Languages: learn languages from across the continent in a welcoming, informal environment
- African Philosophy and discourse: understanding the social constructs and consciousness that underpin different African societies - exploring alternatives to the Western European outlook
We will collaborate with people from across the continent and the diaspora to deliver content that is relevant, bold, engaging and from a view point of knowledge and lived experience.
As a charity we want to encourage open access to these resources and believe that your ability to be involved should not be based on your ability to pay. Our aim is to offer free and subsidised courses wherever possible, to ensure that anyone who wants to access an Africa Centre learning session, can.
The Africa Centre needs your support to turn our ambition into reality. You can support us by:
- Donating to The Africa Centre. You can give as a one-off or set-up a regular payment
- If you're a business, consider sponsoring all or part of our education space
- Starting a fundraising campaign to support The Africa Centre with friends, family and colleagues
- Share our fundraising campaign with everyone you know through social media, email and conversation
Thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign, we appreciate your support and we hope you can visit our new home in the Autumn of 2021.
OUR NEW HOME
In 2015, the Africa Centre moved from its original building in Covent Garden and utilising its own funds together with support from Arts Council England, purchased the freehold of Gunpowder House, in Southwark.
In 2018 The Africa Centre was awarded a further £1.6m from the London Mayors office through the Good Growth Fund, supported by LEAP (Local Enterprise Partnership for London). This funding is dedicated to creating a cultural hub in London and in Autumn 2021 we will open Phase 1 of the new build project which will comprise of a basement, ground floor and first floor. The ground floor will incorporate an African restaurant including a street terrace, a welcome space and a first floor bar. The first floor will be a space for events, people to meet and a curated programme of activities celebrating the unique arts, culture, heritage and innovation of the continent and its diaspora.
Our next goal is to raise £1.6 million pounds to commence Phase 2 of the building development which will deliver the education space and a dedicated business and networking suite connecting Africa and the diaspora.
