Story
We're facing a crisis hidden in plain sight.
Solihull has one of the fastest-ageing populations in the country, with over one in five being over 65. This number is expected to grow significantly over the next 20 years, particularly those aged 85 and over.
Too many older people tell us they feel forgotten, invisible, a burden. Almost a million over 65s in the country, including right here in Solihull, are often lonely.
Loneliness isn’t just unfortunate. It’s linked to higher chances of developing both mental and physical illnesses. Lonely older people are about 25% more likely to develop dementia.
Most people won’t see how bad it really gets. They won’t realise what goes on behind closed doors – the days spent alone, in silence. They won’t know that the phone never rings, not even on Christmas Day.
But Age UK Solihull sees it. And with the help of kind people like you, we can change how we age by helping to tackle it.
From befriending visits to lunch clubs, and walking groups to digital skills sessions, we are here to make sure older people don't face the festive season alone.
But as the nights draw in, the weather turns and lonely days become longer and colder, we need your help to be there so that no one struggles on without the help they deserve.
Your donation could bring connection, comfort and care to an older person facing loneliness this winter and beyond.

Together, we can make Solihull a great place to grow older.
