It’s like a lifeline for her. Since she started going the change in her has been incredible…it’s been a transformation of her character
For 30 Years Age UK York have provided this lifeline through our Social Clubs. Bringing together older residents across York at venues across the City, they're a friendly, fulfilling and stimulating atmosphere and a key way we can directly tackle loneliness.
Loneliness and social isolation can affect us all, and is an issue faced by many older people across the UK, including right here in York. They are seen as one of the biggest health concerns we face and increase the risk of conditions such as dementia, heart disease and depression.
In York more than one in four of residents have shared that they experience loneliness and across our City a third of older people live alone.
We have seen so strongly the local need for, and benefit from, our Social Clubs and Age UK York are committed to be here to help. You can join us.
As a local and independent charity, Age UK York exists to help local people across our communities in York. Too many older people experience loneliness and social isolation and our Social Clubs have been a crucial ways to help tackle this. They offer human contact, compassion and togetherness with a good dose of fun for some of our most vulnerable residents.
It means everything to me. I do not see anybody unless I come to the clubs (Beryl, Acomb).
We know from the people who use our Social Clubs just how much they mean to them. More than half of the people who attend say they spoke to just one or even no other person in the week outside of attending a Club, whilst two in three explain our Social Club is the one of only two times they get out of the house in their week.
We are asking for your help to please support the ongoing funding of this service so we can continue to deliver this vital local support in York. You can help from donating to support the service, kindly offering your time as one of our volunteers in running a Social Club or please do get in touch with us to explore another way.
Our Social Clubs have become a fixture in the weekly diary on which so many local people depend. A chance in a week to speak to others, maintain friendships in older age, enjoy activities, and receive support and care and so much more. It is also so important to family and carers of those our experienced and skilled team support as it offers vital respite and a breather to unpaid carers, many of whom have caring needs themselves.
“The day club has been a lifeline for him to socialise with people his own age in a supported way”
“It brings some much needed sense of fun to an otherwise dull existence”.
With your help we can ensure our support is available for older local people here in York into the future.
As Age UK York we are a not-for-profit charity and are looking at creating a new Social Club offer so we can build a sustainable service that can continue to be there for older residents now and into the future. We are asking for your help…
1. Please donate. Your generosity can help make our Social Clubs become a reality again. Together we can help reintroduce and grow this much loved and needed service so local people can again attend, forge friendships, enjoy conversation and offer respite to carers and family knowing that their loved one is in the best of hands.
Every penny donated goes right back to supporting our local charity’s work right here in York.
2. Volunteer.
People are at the heart of all we do. Whilst we exist to help older people and those around them here in York we can only do this with the help of our staff and volunteers.
We are looking at creating a new Social Club volunteer team. Together we can help provide these Social Clubs at venues across York so those in need and for whom the service is such a lifeline and joy can benefit.
Please visit https://www.ageuk.org.uk/york/get-involved/volunteer/ to find out more.
Volunteering is an incredible experience and please do consider whether you can give some time and your kindness and compassion to help others as part of our team. With a new volunteer team we will be able to grow our Social Club offer so more people can benefit.
