The campaign has now expired but it's not too late to support this charity.
Visit the charity's profileAhkom School provides an education for about 700 pre-primary, primary and secondary school children in Kono - girls and boys aged 4-18. Kono is a very poor region of Sierra Leone. The school was started by David Sandi in 2005 and is funded entirely by donations - none of the parents can afford school fees.
There are currently 8 classrooms at the school with capacity for 400 children. Classes in Sierra Leone normally start early and finish around lunch time. The school has been forced to implement an afternoon shift for the additional 300 children, beginning when the main cohort of pupils go home. This late start is far from ideal - lessons in the searing afternoon heat are extremely uncomfortable and the late finish can be dangerous for children who have to make their way home along bush paths, even worse in the wet months.
We have started building 6 additional classrooms and we need a further £5000 to finish them. Costs are broken down as: metal doors £540 and windows £860, roof (boards, nails, completion of gable, zinc pans etc) £1120, concrete floor £750, wiring £290, veranda £200, boys toilets £310, girls toilets £350, water well/pump £250 - total £4670. We are adding an extra £330 for unexpected costs.
