Story
In Uganda, disabled children face daily discrimination that denies them the chance to learn, socialise and be part of their communities. In fact a staggering 91% miss out on primary education. And without vital schooling they are left with low confidence and little hope of becoming independent.
Children like 12 year old Jacob and Isaac who are best friends. Jacob has cerebral palsy and didn't go to school when he was younger as his parents were worried that he would be bullied. However last year they finally enrolled him. He told us that the other children are often unkind to him and he sometimes feels lonely. But it didn't take long for Isaac to befriend him. The school they attend has a specialist sports coach who teaches inclusive games that everyone can take part in. Isaac is a wheelchair user and loves sports.
I enjoy being part of a team and I love to play with other children who are different to me. Playing sports is special to me because it makes me feel like I am accepted. It is good for me because it helps me to make friends. I would like Jacob to play more sports with me; I think it will help him feel more confident.
The All Stars-Appeal will help create more schools where differences are embraced and children like Jacob and Isaac have the chance to integrate and learn.
