Nestled in the Surrey Hills and in the heart of the beautiful village of Tilford this small church, built over 150 years ago, stands and proclaims God’s presence within the community - welcoming all and being a place of joy and peace.

Story

Nestled in the Surrey Hills AONB the village of Tilford is first mentioned in historical records from the Cistercian Monastery, Waverley Abbey, founded in 1128.

The church, consecrated in 1867, sits at the heart of the village between the two medieval bridges which span the branches of the River Wey.

A significant fall of the original lath and plaster ceiling in the nave of the church means the building is no longer safe. The church must now remain closed until we can fund the work required.

An initial inspection has revealed that some or all of the ceiling will need replacing at a significant cost. Further inspections and a full survey are planned and we will then be able to put a schedule of work in place.

The building is Grade II Listed and therefore any work will need to be completed by an heritage expert able to work with traditional lime plaster on laths. In addition there is the challenge of working around the pews which are all fixed to the heating pipes!

Initial estimates and quotes put the cost of the repair in the region of £100,000.
