Story
Herons Wey is a 52-acre campsite run entirely by volunteers. It is primarily used by leaders and young people involved in Girlguiding and Scouting, as well as groups undertaking Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. We also welcome small groups from schools and local charities, including those supporting children and families with additional needs.
In recent years, we have experienced longer periods of drought. As a result, we are keen to improve our campfire and fire base areas across the woodland and campsite to reduce the risk of fires spreading unintentionally. Our aim is to install permanent fire pits and fireplaces within our campfire circles and camping areas.
Campfires and fire lighting are a core part of both the Guiding and Scouting movements, and teaching young people safe fire practices is essential. In 2026, Girlguiding will also introduce a new Outdoor Cooking module within the Going Away With Scheme, which will train leaders to prepare meals safely while camping.
We would be very grateful if you would consider making a donation towards this project. Each fire pit costs approximately £300, and each fireplace costs around £400. Any contribution would help us make the site safer for the many young people who use it each year.
