Become a human rights defender!
Unfortunately, in the current world climate, human rights are increasingly under threat. This has come in an array of alarming forms in a number of countries, such as the imprisonment of British-Iranian Mother Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in Iran.
Help Nazanin get home
Nazanin is a British-Iranian woman who has been imprisoned in Iran for the past two years, despite not having committed a crime. In April 2016, she was arrested at Tehran airport when boarding a plane home to the UK with her young daughter, Gabriella, who was just one year old at the time. Gabriella was given to her grandparents in Iran, where she has remained since, and Nazanin was escorted away by Iran's Revolutionary Guard. Nazanin was not told why she had been arrested and was kept in solitary confinement for 45 days. In September 2016, after an unfair trial where Nazanin only gained access to a lawyer three days before her trial, she was sentenced to five years for membership of an illegal group in connection with her work at the charity, Thomson Reuters Foundation, and previously at BBC Media Action. Nazanins family has been torn apart and her physical and mental health is suffering. Due to her prison conditions, her hair is falling out and she has severe arm, neck and back pain. Nazanins husband, has also revealed that her legs have gone numb and that because of her deteriorating mental health, the strength of her medication has had to be increased.
