Story
The Museum of Anaesthesia is a place where the remarkable story of anaesthesia comes to life. From its first public demonstration in 1846 to the modern day, anaesthetists have played a crucial role in the aftermath of wars and terrorist attacks. The museum, rare book collection, and archive serve as a unique resource for both curious visitors and specialist researchers.
Your support will help us continue our work, including the display of public exhibitions, the staging of events, and the conservation of our collections. Together, we can ensure that this important history is preserved for future generations!
At the moment, the Museum is is raising funds for a commemorative plaque for pioneer anaesthetist Sir Ivan Magill.
In his long career, Magill introduced techniques and designed tools that are still around today, many decades later. In the 1930s, he was also instrumental in setting up the Diploma in Anaesthetics – the first formal qualification for anaesthetists in the United Kingdom – which raised the specialty’s status in the medical world.
You can read more about Magill's remarkable life and work in his oral history on our website.
