Story

From Glasgow to Freetown for an ultrasound machine for anaesthetics

We are Glasgow health care professionals who have a long history of working with staff in Ghana, Sierra Leone and Malawi.

Over a period of months a group of us are going to use our feet/arms to virtually travel the 7325 km distance from Glasgow Royal Infirmary to the Connaught Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

We are hoping to raise a considerable sum to provide an Ultrasound machine (£20,000) for Dr Mohamed Kargbo and his team. This will be used in the new Plastic Surgery and Burns unit currently being built at the Connaught in Freetown.

The Ultrasound machine will allow operations to be undertaken under nerve blocks and also provide good pain relief for burns patients. It will save money for the hospital and the patients as they may not need general anaesthetics and to buy painkillers.

Dr Kargbo has been trained in these techniques. He just needs a machine.

Funds will also be used to allow us to continue our work training clinicians and helping burns patients in areas of Africa.

Times are tight but if you can help it will be much appreciated.
