Organised by CWUHA

Working with our partners Mad-Aid we are helping to refurbish a children’s surgery ward in the Institute of Mother and Child in Chisinau, Moldova, that cares for children with serious health issues.

Communication Workers Union Humanitarian Aid (CWUHA) is a charitable organisation which was set up by trade unionists in response to the plight of vulnerable children. We operate mainly in Eastern Europe, Africa, Republic of Ireland and the UK.

Story

Sadly, last year CWUHA lost a dear friend and one of our greatest ambassadors Andy Kerr the former CWU Deputy General Secretary.

Andy helped secure thousands of pounds in funding for the charity as well as the loan of BT vehicles and release for BT/Openreach members to take part in CWUHA Convoys to Eastern Europe. He also secured funding for projects with our partners Mad-Aid in Moldova. Not content with raising funds he also joined us on a convoy to Moldova - a place that was close to his heart.

So, it feels very fitting that the CWUHA trustees have agreed that our 30th Anniversary Project in Moldova is to be dedicated to the memory of Andy.

Working with our partners Mad-Aid we are helping to refurbish a children’s surgery ward in the Institute of Mother and Child in Chisinau, Moldova, that cares for children with serious health issues.

Moldova is the poorest country in Europe and infant mortality is about three times higher than the European average.

The ward itself has not been repaired or re-equipped since 1986 and is in a deplorable state. Nevertheless, the staff perform miracles under these circumstances.

We are looking to raise £40k to help fund the purchase of new furniture for the ward, new electrical equipment and to provide an indoor play area that will be dedicated to Andy’s memory.
