In Uganda, over half of the population lack safe, sustainable access to water. Households spend on average TWO HOURS per day collecting water - a burden usually carried by girls, disrupting their education.
Equal Aqua Uganda is deeply concerned about water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions in Uganda, and the wider effects this has on health, education, livelihoods and the environment. Specifically, our operations focus on the rural communities of Eastern Uganda, in particular, Bukedea District.
- WASH Skills Workshops: since 2021, we delivered workshops for over 50 community groups. We teach practical skills related to WASH, such as how to make liquid soap, bar soap, shampoo and sanitary pads. Our workshops are designed so that Ugandans can use these new skills to support their families and create entrepreneurial opportunities. For instance, many women's groups have started their own initiatives to sell WASH products in their communities.
-Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM): we deliver MHM sessions across multiple locations across Eastern Uganda. Each of the sessions showcases MHM best practices and raises awareness of common misconceptions about menstrual hygiene, which highlight the barriers that women and girls face every day.
- Water filters: our natural, ceramic water filters help to eliminate 99.9% of bacteria. These filters can produce 3-4 litres of clean water per hour and they require very little maintenance. The key benefit will be empowering women and girls, who will no longer need to travel long distances to collect clean water that is safe for drinking.
-Ecobrick tanks: we support the construction of rainwater harvesting tanks for schools in Eastern Uganda. This provides convenient, free and safe access to water for thousands of students and staff. This means that they do not need to walk several hours to collect water, leaving them time for the most important things: education, development and play.
-To improve health, hygiene and overall quality of life for many communities in Uganda.
-To provide safe and clean access to water for the most disadvantaged groups in Uganda
-To raise awareness of the stigma surrounding menstruation for women and young girls
-To train women and girls on how to make liquid soap and sanitary pads, which are environmentally friendly, durable and affordable
