Arias story is a long and complicated one which began at a 32-week anti-natal scan where Aria was diagnosed with severe ventriculomegaly and very little brain matter. It was at this time that we were advised to terminate due to a significantly high chance of a very poor quality of life. This was not an option for us.
Since then she has been diagnosed with 13 different conditions, had 3 brain surgeries more hospital admissions that we can count.
One of her conditions is cerebral palsy which makes her legs very stiff and she walks on the tips of her outer toes. Various treatments have been tried to support with this but they have been unsuccessful.
Aria was referred to Alder Hey hospital for the SDR surgery to help reduce her high tone and improve her walking. Luckily this was funded by the NHS but the rehabilliation poat surgery is long and complex.
After been on the housing list with our local council for 4 1/2 years of which we were an emergency and priority for 3 of those, we were finally able to more into a council property in April 2022. This is amazing but unfortunately the property needs alot of work to meet Arias needs and keep her safe.
Due to safety reasons we have been unable to take Aria upstairs since January 2022. This means that Aria only had access to the living room and hall way. She also has to sleep downstairs, so her bed takes up a good portion of the living room. I in fact sleep on the sofa. She has no access to any wash or shower facilities at home so this is either provided by school or we have to access them elsewhere.
As such we need to make alot of adaptations and purchase equipment to ensure that Arias needs are met, she is safe and the house will be suitable long term. These adaptations would include a wet room, making the downstairs open plan (more suitable access), a through ceiling lift, an extension to make her bedroom big enough for her safe space bed and lift, a sensory room/safe space and other specialist equipment.
We are able to access the disability housing grant but this will only cover part of the cost needed to make our home suitable for Aria long term.
Please help is turn this house into a long term home for Aria!
