So many of you were touched by the very sad story of the Greek lady who was dying of cancer and her dogs were left all alone for one month without a single relative looking out for them.
Fortunately our Fotini found the dogs, Aris, Didi and Bijoux in a terrible state in their home surviving on their wits like street dogs.
DIdi got lucky because thanks to all of your shares he is now in a wonderful home in the UK. Hes been here for two months now and he is doing really well.
But 5 weeks ago we had the heartbreaking news that the lady has passed away and her relatives were about to throw Aris and Bijoux out of their home and on to the streets.
Aris seemed to sense this and was escaping every day and finding his way to Fotinis house. This of course broke Fotinis heart. There was no more room for any more stray dogs at her home. There was only one place safe for them and it was with an extremely heavy heart that Fotini took them to the shelter.
Our hearts break for all the rescuers all over the world because this is what they go through on a daily basis but this story really touches our hearts because this is our dear little friend Fotini and we know what she is going through right now.
The stress of what she and her best friend, Vaggelio, go through is unimaginable. They have one other friend, Anna, who fosters dogs but other than Anna, it is just the 2 of them spending every spare hour up at the shelter doing their best in the most horrendous, disgusting conditions. Dealing with death and the heartbreak of so many dumped puppies and hunting dogs.and then tragic stories like this.
Fortunately they now have a small but strong band of supporters, mostly made up the family and friends who have adopted dogs from them. And following a massive share of Aris and Bijouxs story another small UK charity came forward to help us find a foster home for the two of them together and we are so happy to tell you that they are leaving leaving Lemnos tonight!!!
The journey from Lemnos isnt easy. With only 3 ferries a week off the island our courier will meet Aris and Bijoux and take them to stay in kennels near Athens in time to meet their kennels on wheels on Tuesday.
They then travel with our lovely couriers on the overnight ferry to Italy and travel overland to Calais where they should hopefully arrive, weather and strikes permitting, by Friday. Saturday they will be delivered directly to their foster home.
Many respected charities keep costs down by asking new owners to collect their dogs from a central motorway service station.
We have taken the more expensive option with our dogs delivered directly to their new homes. Too many dogs have bolted at the hand-over. And unless your a super-chilled dog its not the best way to meet your new mum and dad!
Aris and Bijouxs travel is £750 each plus extensive health checks and blood tests which cost a massive 300 euros each. If we could raise £1000 to cover part of their travel it would be amazing.
If you can help us achieve any more in donations then it will go into our Golden Oldie Fund which is now seriously depleted following a few of the older dogs needing veterinary treatment when they arrived into the UK in foster with us.
Thank you to all of you who give so generously every time. We could never help so many Golden Oldies without you.
