May 30th 2022 sees the 135th birthday of the club now known as Ashbrooke Sports Club. On May 30th 1887 the then Sunderland Cricket and Football Club celebrated the opening of its new ground as the two clubs (founded in 1834 and 1873) joined forces, forging a combination which is still in force today. The opening was celebrated with a sports day something which had already been something of an annual event for the two combined yet officially separate clubs for a number of years.
From those early beginnings, through two world wars to today, Ashbrooke Sports Club has been at the heart of the leafy Sunderland suburb and still is the home for Sunderland Cricket and Rugby teams. Over time, other sports have joined forces with us and we are now proud to provide a home to Squash and Bowls
It requires a great deal of money to maintain a facility of such age and cultural significance and recently this money has become harder to come by, especially thanks to COVID which decimated sport in the region. The post-COVID recovery, whilst encouraging, continues at a slower than expected pace, which is why we are reaching out for donations to help us keep this grand old lady afloat through these difficult days.
Every penny raised will help us to continue to provide top-class sporting facilities for the residents of Sunderland. Thank you.
