Story
The Ashcombe School Sponsored Walk is a vital part of the school journey for all our staff and students, and the funds raised each year have helped to transform the learning environment and experience of our students.
With the glorious backdrop of the Surrey Hills, we are looking forward to heading out to enjoy the outdoors while raising funds for a project that will benefit every student.
This year, we are fundraising to install a series of shade sails outside the Ranmore building. The area at the front of Ranmore currently offers very little protection from the sun and can become particularly exposed during periods of hot weather. The installation of shade sails will create a more comfortable, welcoming and attractive outdoor space for students, whilst also supporting our commitment to sustainability and climate resilience.
As part of our Sponsored Walk fundraising efforts, we are aiming to transform the front of Ranmore by installing three shade sail structures, covering a total area of approximately 15 metres by 5 metres above the existing tables and seating. This project will create a welcoming outdoor space that can be enjoyed by everyone in our school community. Surrounded by attractive planting, the new shaded area will enhance the appearance of the school entrance, adding visual interest while creating a more comfortable and inviting environment for pupils, staff and visitors.
A key driver for this project is climate resilience. As temperatures continue to rise and periods of hot weather become more frequent, it is increasingly important to provide cooler, sheltered outdoor spaces where students can safely gather during breaktimes and lunch periods. Shade sails offer a practical and sustainable solution, reducing heat exposure, improving comfort and encouraging greater use of outdoor areas throughout the year. By investing in shade provision now, we will be creating a more resilient, attractive and usable space that supports wellbeing, outdoor learning and social interaction for many years to come.
The project will be delivered in phases. Our aim is to install three canopies in total, with the first phase focusing on two canopies. We are also exploring additional funding opportunities, including support through climate resilience initiatives, to help bring the project to life.
This is likely to be a two year fundraising project, meaning that if we do not reach our target this year, fundraising will continue next year until the project is completed. Once installed, the shade sails will provide a lasting benefit for generations of Ashcombe students, creating a cooler, more attractive and more usable outdoor space for everyone.
We hope that all students who are able to do so will take part and seek sponsorship. Thank you to everyone who can support this the event, every donation makes a difference.
