Auckland Castle is surrounded by 10-acres of beautifully landscaped historic gardens, originally designed for the Prince Bishops of Durham.
Pioneering horticultural techniques were developed at Auckland Castle, including heated walls and glass hothouses to grow vegetables, flowers, fruit and even pineapples for the bishop’s guests.
Today, our own gardeners are using their talents and experience to redevelop and restore the gardens to their former glory.
- The C17th Walled Garden is full of produce once again, which can be sampled at our cafes and restaurants
- The Faith Garden is a reflective space, full of history, attached to the new Faith Museum
- The Wilderness Garden is full of native planting, and a place to explore and hide away.
The opening of the Great Garden will be in 2025. Each outdoor space celebrates a different aspect of Auckland Castle’s history, taking visitors on a journey through time as well as through the seasons.
We are delighted to be working with landscape architect Pip Morrison who has been supporting our in-house team of gardeners and dedicated Horticulture Apprentices.
The Parks and Gardens team includes trainee and apprentice gardeners who have the opportunity to work on some extraordinary and ambitious projects and schemes.
One of our young horticulturalists, Lucy, has just been awarded the Chartered Institute of Horticulture's Young Horticulturalist of the Year - for the third time running!
