She was the very first pup of the season, making her very special indeed. Grey seals give birth from August to January. After 3 short weeks, mum must leave to feed. All alone, seal pups face numerous threats including human disturbance, winter storms and having to teach themselves to feed.
Very sadly Augusta didnt make it.
British Divers Marine Life Rescue were called out to record her for the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Marine Strandings Network. Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust saw this as a valuable opportunity to help people learn about anatomy, seal pups and the issues they face in our marine environment. Buried for just over a year, Augusta has just been exhumed and cleaned, and she has been sent to Derek Frampton, a professional articulator and reconstructor of skeletons.
Augusta will join Septimus, an adult male grey seal skeleton, to allow people to learn about and compare a 3 day old female pup with a fully grown grey seal. Their stories will inspire people to take action to look after the marine environment for future generations of seals and people.
Augusta didnt die in vain.
