Story

Many colleagues and customers would have known Barry as Mr Makita due to his 44 years of dedication to the company. Above all else, Barry was a family man - a devoted Husband, Father and Grandfather. Stories, jokes and laughter followed Barry wherever he went, this being the reason he was cherished by so many. Known for his smile, he was there with words of support for whoever needed them. His loss will be felt profoundly by so many because of his truly kindhearted nature.

As a dedication to his kind heartedness, this page has been set up in his memory. Having never been much of a fan of flowers (often having them banished to the conservatory or removed from a dinner table) his wife and daughters would kindly welcome donations to a charity close to them and their family. Barry’s sister-in-law Mariot Dallas is the co-convenor and trustee of the Mamie Martin Fund. All donations will go to support girls’ education in Malawi, where they receive no state funded secondary education and are forced into early marriages continuing a vicious cycle of poverty.

Barry’s family would be proud to ensure Malawian girls have the same opportunities as his daughters and granddaughters will in their lifetimes. Thank you.

We work with partners in North Malawi to support girls at 8 secondary schools. We pay the fees of these girls along with providing additional help to the most needy so that they can benefit from their school place. We've been working there since 1993, taking forward the vision of Mamie Martin.
