The Collection's mission is to tell the story of test flying and aircraft development at Boscombe Down and other airfields in the Wesex area. Based at Old Sarum Airfield, Salisbury in two World War 1 hangars, the Collection provides hands-on experience to visitors who can sit in aircraft cockpits.

Story

The Boscombe Down Aviation Collection is dedicated to telling the story of Boscombe Down and its place in the history of Flight and Flight Test.   However, since moving to the 1916 Belfast Truss Hangars on the historic former RFC airfield at Old Sarum that policy has been extended to operations on the airfield and in the near Wessex region.   Consequently, the Collections aircraft must have that relationship in their provenance and in that respect the Collection has a unique place in the heritage aviation world.  The philosophy of the Collection is to entertain, educate and inspire all those who visit.   Therefore the Collection has no barriers and actively encourages visitors to get up close and personal with the aircraft.   Indeed visitors have access to a large number of the airframes to really experience someone elses office.   In addition to the aircraft, and the restoration work that is undertaken, the Collection is constructing a considerable RFC Gallery, relevant as Old Sarum is in the creative cradle of the RFC.   In addition space is being made for a comprehensive display on the ROC with particular reference to Area 14 which includes Salisbury, Old Sarum and Amesbury.   The Collection is remaining true to its maxim Recover, Restore, Retain .
