Saving Seal Pups in the North East

Every year, vulnerable seal pups are rescued along our coastline — cold, injured, underweight or separated from their mothers. Their journey back to the wild begins at our NEST Unit in Morpeth, where they receive lifesaving veterinary care, hydration, medication and round‑the‑clock support.

Once stable and self‑feeding, the pups travel to the St Abbs Seal Unit at the Marine Station, where they complete their rehabilitation. Here they build strength and prepare for release.

Grey seals return to the waters at St Abbs; common seals are released just south of the border to ensure they re‑enter their natural range.

Why We Need Your Help

To keep the St Abbs Seal Unit running safely, we urgently need essential equipment — including building materials, a new freezer, weighing scales, overalls and stable mats for floats. These aren’t luxuries; they’re the practical tools that make rehabilitation possible.
