BECS' BATTLE

BECS is Scotland's FIRST Inclusive Soft Play Centre. We are based in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire and were here to help children and families with additional support needs. In time, we hope to open other branches of BECS throughout Scotland.

BECS is the first public inclusive soft play centre in the north east of scotland that offers inclusion and integration between those with additional needs and mainstream children. At BECS abilities are not the main focus

Story

The idea for BECS came from a long career working with children and the frustrations I felt when I was trying to find places to take my godson, who has cerebral palsy. Children with additional support needs face a life of exclusion. A life without the chance to play safely, interact with their peers and enjoy themselves. A chance to just be like other children for once and for their parents to relax while watching their child play at BECS. BECS was the result of two years of fundraising and sourcing specialised play equipment by Becky Mennie. BECS is set up as (SCIO) Charity under the OSCR Regulators

Based in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, BECS is the first public inclusive soft play centre in Scotland which allows for reverse inclusion and integration between those with additional needs and mainstream children.

BECS is a centre which is fully adapted for all children up to the age of 12 where abilities are not the main focus. BECS is designed to be the same as any other soft play centre, but with the specialist capability to cater for children of all abilities without making an obvious distinction. This is a unique approach not found anywhere else in the country allowing families with mixed ability children to socialise in a safe and specialist environment, often for the first time.

We are also now regarded as the best "Hub" support for a wide variety of other local groups and charities. These groups use the BECS facilities and services to support their own clients and beneficiaries due to the specialist environment, equipment and knowledge available at the centre.

Since opening up on the 26th August until the the corona-virus crisis forced us to close on the 18th March we have had a great response from the public with an estimate of the following visitor numbers: 153 - 0-6 month 2,829 - 7 month - 2 years 1,050 - 3 years plus 42 - private Hires/parties 33 - childminders with a max. 3 children 34 - monthly passes bought 42 - dads attend "Daddy Day Care" 220 - unaccounted ages.

Team Jak, Charlie's House, Down Syndrome Scotland, Spiking Autism, Grampian Autistic Society and Rainbow Rogues are some of the local charities who regularly use our facilities at BECS.
