The Belfast Trans Resource Centre started in 2016 as a project between Genderjam and Sail NI. TransgenderNI ran the space until 2023, growing the space further while also delivering important social work and campaigning for the Trans* community in Northern Ireland.
As of 2024, the Belfast Trans Resource Centre Limited was founded as an official charity to take over the management of the space and help grow the important work delivered by Belfast's most iconic Trans* community space.
The BTRC offers direct support to people who identify with the trans umbrella in Northern Ireland as well as facilitating social drop-ins, running a variety of events, offering an online social environment and working to organise and campaign for better treatment for all trans* individuals in Northern Ireland.
Since its inception the Resource Centre has always believed in ensuring trans voices are at the centre of all of our work, and we are proud to be fully run by amazing trans people.
We've seen a rise in anti-trans sentiment, including new and challenging discriminatory laws coming into place in Northern Ireland, at a time when trans people are facing a healthcare system which is not fit for purpose and proposed wait times of over seven years for initial appointments.
Thankfully we have also seen an outpouring of support for our community and greater understanding of the issues we face. We believe the future for trans people is one of acceptance and we are proud to be helping move towards that future.
We have always relied on grassroots support to ensure we can provide our critical work, and so we would be very grateful for any donations, no matter how small. If you are not in a position to donate there are still other ways to support us- such as sharing this campaign, or putting together a fundraiser! In the past we have had people put on film nights, run charity game streams and host sponsored runs!
All money raised through this fundraiser goes towards running costs of the centre including rent, maintenance, utilities, food and drink, running special events, volunteer expenses and such!
