Story
Bempton Cliffs on the Yorkshire coast offers the most accessible opportunity in the UK to experience the wonder of a seabird colony. Half a million seabirds make these sheer cliffs their home each summer and the colony is of international importance.
Dedicated volunteers engage and inspire over 120,000 visitors each year from our viewpoints. Puffins are most popular and the spectacle of thousands of Guillemots, Kittiwakes and Razorbills, along with spectacular Gannets and graceful Fulmars, is truly awe-inspiring.
Seabirds face many threats, from marine developments, over-fishing, disturbance and climate change, but with public support we can make a difference. We have seen this with the recent sandeel fishery closure - a lifeline for seabirds. Seeing seabirds at Bempton Cliffs inspires thousands of people to support nature every year.
The Problem
The recent wet winters have meant that there is increasing erosion at the clifftop and action is needed now to develop new viewpoints and to secure the future of this special experience into the seabird’s world.
With your help we can ensure future generations are inspired by Bempton Cliffs. We’re aiming to raise £85,000 to help progress the next phase of our plans for Bempton Cliffs. This funding will support design work for a new viewpoint and contribute to the wider investment needed to enhance and future proof the visitor experience at this extraordinary site. Creating new structures at the top of 100 metre chalk cliffs—home to one of the UK’s busiest seabird colonies—is an exciting but complex undertaking, and your support will help us unlock further funding and take the project forward.
The following images are two artist impressions of the way the new viewing area could look.

Please note that regardless of whether we raise less than the target, or exceed it, the funds raised will come to RSPB Bempton Cliffs. If you’d like to learn more about our long term vision for Bempton Cliffs, or are considering making a gift of £500 or more, please get in touch with the RSPB Philanthropy team at philanthropy@rspb.org.uk.
Together, we can help ensure this remarkable place continues to inspire everyone who visits for many years to come.
Thank You.
