A Bespoke Bench for Newstead Village Green

Sadly, the Jubilee Bench which looked onto the Eildons had to be removed last year. We want to take the opportunity to replace it with a hand-carved, bespoke bench which will be a feature to be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come.

Newstead Village Community Trust is a volunteer organisation aiming to support our community to achieve the ambitions outlined in Newstead Village's Community Action Plan. We will support community cohesion, look after our natural environment and promote and celebrate our heritage and history.

Story

The Jubilee commemorative bench which sat at the North end of the Green, looking towards the Eildon Hills, sadly had to be removed last year as it was no longer safe. As our community deserves something special to replace it, the Village Green Committee, on behalf of NVCT, have approached the multi-award winning, local chain saw artist, Sam Bowsher to commission a bespoke bench befitting our special Village. The unique, hand-carved bench will also serve to mark the anniversary of our hard-fought battle to bring the Green into community ownership.

Sam has risen to the challenge and has come up with a fabulous design incorporating all things River Tweed which will be a stunning feature on the Green for years to come. The bench will be made from sustainably sourced logs and showcase Sam’s fantastic carving skills. It will include a taste of what you might encounter if you wander down Eddy Road to the River, including otters, salmon and the stoic heron. What better way to take some time out and enjoy the view of the Eildons than from our very own work of art!
