Continued restoration of this Grade 2 listed Chapel

Organised by Bethel Chapel Shelf

We've reached the target amount of £15,000, the shortfall to complete phase 4, thanks to all who have supported us. We're now raising money for phase 5 to ensure the extension is water tight and the outside is decorated to match the other elevations.

We strive to be a faithful, welcoming and compassionate church for all. Using the church as a resource for community events led by the church and other community organisations. We are self-financing and receive no help from elsewhere to keep this the only listed church building in Shelf open.

Story

How can you help?

A small donation from everyone who has visited Bethel Chapel, or has been connected at anytime, would make the difference needed to keep this Methodist Chapel open, when many around us are closing.

We certainly do not want more houses building on the land around Shelf or it converting into something the village does not want or need.

Please dig deep and give what you can to help us to keep this beautiful, historic, listed building open and available for community use. Thank you.

Have you ever visited Bethel Chapel?

Maybe you’re a past member of the Sunday School or attended weekly Boys Brigade, Brownie, Rainbow, or Guide meetings at Bethel?

Have you been married, christened, or attended a funeral at Bethel?

Do you enjoy visiting our annual Christmas Tree Festival?

Or do you visit our memorial garden and graveyard to remember a loved one?

Two quotes from recent visitors:

Great place, lovely friendly people. Had a great day with my grandson visiting Santa , one happy little boy!

An amazingly peaceful place with lovely people

The story so far .....

We replaced the roof in 2018 and repaired the beautiful Victorian ceiling upstairs in 2020. With the help of our loyal congregation, friends, family, the community and a grant from Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust we raised the money to complete not only phase three, but also phase four of this comprehensive project. This included repointing and repairing the stonework and restoring and painting the 22 arched windows and 2 large doors of our grade 2 listed Chapel. This work was completed in July 2024.

As an Independent Chapel we are self-financing and must meet the cost of up keeping our Chapel from our fundraising events.

We are now moving to phase 5 and are hoping to raise the money to make repairs to the roof and doors of the extension and paint the exterior to match the new colour scheme.
