On Wednesday 13th October 2021, a team of eight Members of the BIFA Young Forwarder Network will be completing the Chase the Moon Olympic Park 5k in aid of Transaid. Please donate what you can to help Transaid continue their vital work transforming lives through safe, available, and sustainable transport!
Kicking off at 7:00pm, we will be channelling our inner Olympians by running a 5k through the Olympic Park specially built to host the 2012 Olympic Games! The flat course will pass a number of the Games iconic landmarks, such as the Diamond Bridge and the Tallow Bridge.
The team from the BIFA Young Forwarder Network includes Kyle Lawrence , Luke Hurt , Laura Hobby , Katie-Louise Thompson-Friend, Kelly Jarrold, Ryan Smith , Ellis Stevens and Josh Clark.
Approximately 1.35 million people die each year as a result of road traffic incidents. More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclist and motorcyclists. Even though low and middle income countries only account for approximately 60% of the worlds vehicles, they experience 93% of the global fatalities on roads. Road safety continues to be an important part of Transaid's work despite the various challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has presented this year thanks to their partners and supporters, including BIFA.
Transaid has also continued work on their access to healthcare programmes, supporting rural communities by reducing barriers to healthcare.
In Zambia, the MAM at Scale programme expanded coverage to 10 districts, covering 900,000 people with their community-led joint malaria and COVID-19 response. In the last year alone Community Health Volunteers made 66,000 door to door visits, raising awareness on severe malaria and other childhood diseases. Additionally, between April 2020 - March 2021, 3,102 people utilised emergency transport systems implemented with Transaid's support. These fantastic outcomes were achieved through activities such as the building of eight new bicycle ambulances in February 2021, with 24 bicycle ambulance riders trained a month later.
What your help could fund:
£240 could buy 800 doses of RAS (pre-referral anti-malarial drug, buying a sick child an extra 12 hours to reach a health facility).
£120 could buy a strong bicycle for a health worker, enabling doctors and nurses to reach more communities every day.
£100 could buy locally produced facemasks for 100 community health volunteers in Zambia.
£60 could buy PPE and run COVID-19 sensitisation sessions for ten truck drivers.
£12 could buy the materials to install eight tippy taps, to equip four communities with two hand washing facilities.
With your help Transaid can continue to improve rural community access to healthcare and ensure that truck drivers do not have to fear for their health when they leave for a days work.
