NEWway Project is a local charity based in the London Borough of Newham. We provide a direct response to the growing challenge of single adult homelessness and rough sleeping in our area. NEWway offers a safe daytime space, a winter shelter, and specialist advice for those facing the trauma of homelessness, supporting them throughout the journey away from homelessness. We are with our guests every step of the way and have seen many come through extreme hardship to rebuild their futures.
This year, we are excited to announce a special fundraising initiative where previous guests of NEWway are coming together to give back to the charity that supported them to make positive changes and move forward.
To honour their journeys to date and to show how far they've come, they will be cycling 100 miles—each one pushing past physical and personal boundaries. Through this campaign, we ask for your support, both in sponsoring their ride and sharing their powerful stories.
Our goal is to raise £5000 to continue providing essential services for adults facing homelessness in Newham. The funds raised will support NEWway’s ongoing work, including housing advice and assistance, health support, job training, and life skills workshops.
Every mile cycled and every penny donated will make a real difference in someone's life.
Sponsor our charity:
Each cyclist has a unique story to share about their time with NEWway and the support they received that helped them overcome homelessness. Their journey, unique to them, is a snapshot of 661 different journeys we supported last year. By donating to our charity, you will make a difference to each and every individual that comes through our door.
Spread the Word:
Help us reach a wider audience by sharing the campaign with your friends, family, and social networks. Through GiveMatch, your donation will be doubled when two other friends donate too! If they get two people to donate, their donation will be matched as well. The more people who know about the ride, the more support we can gather for NEWway guests.
Join the Event:
Feeling inspired? Why not get your old bike out of the shed and do your own cycling challenge, while raising money for our charity? You can set up your own crowdfunding page or contact us and we will help you do that.
Each cyclist has a personal story about how NEWway’s support changed their life. From the moment they came through the doors of our charity, NEWway has been a place of purpose and a community of belonging for them. Now, it’s their turn to give back.
KRZYSZTOF’s Story
Krzysztof came to us looking for shelter, immigration advice, employment support, and day centre support. We know him as a very hardworking man who will oversee our kitchen area and leave it spotless at the end of the day. He is a great friend to other guests, who values companionship and mutual respect. We are actively working with him to help him move on.
IOAN’s Story:
Ioan came to NEWway after squatting in disused garages when his employment ended. He quickly found purpose to his day by volunteering his time in our day centre, supporting others with laundry and food, and keenly committed to helping others who find themselves in a similar position. Ioan has recently been moved to a local supported accommodation and is concentrating on improving his health.
RADU’s Story:
Radu had been living in a tent for months when he came to NEWway. With the charity’s help, he has received his full status in the UK, and is now a committed student to ESOL, learning to read and write and improve his communication. Radu is awaiting his place in supported accommodation where he will receive crucial wellbeing support, while still visiting our day centre and giving haircuts to our guests.
VIK’s Story
Vik was one of the first guests to stay in NEWway winter night shelter. He has lost his job and struggled with the effects of deteriorating mental health. With the support of NEWway, he moved into supported accommodation and pursued his dream of training as an interpreter for those who do not have English as a first language. Vik now volunteers to sleep over in the shelter that once gave him a roof and a hope. Vik works for our social enterprise and is looking to move into his own rented flat.
CLIFF’s Story
Unlike others, Cliff was in so-called hidden homelessness, looking for a safe place to stay overnight here and there without being visibly sleeping rough. Cliff came to us looking for training and employment opportunities which he embraced wholeheartedly. Nowadays, he is a dedicated Minibus volunteer during our shelter season.
JESS’s Story
Jess loves gardening. It is her shelter and a place of calm. She came to our services with a complicated Housing Benefit situation which was solved thanks to undeterred advocacy from our caseworker. More than anything, Jess values wellbeing sessions that provide close contact with nature. She also volunteers at our winter night shelter.
The cyclists will be led by the charity’s co-founder, Jonny Adams. Together with our Director and a few passionate Newham residents as founding Trustees, he set up our charity in 2013. In 2021, Jonny moved on to establish a gardening social enterprise, collaborating closely with NEWway to provide essential education, training, and employment opportunities to our guests. Once a week, he leads wellbeing sessions at our day centre and creates opportunities for our guests to give back to our charity.
Every donation will directly fund NEWway’s vital work in helping individuals escape homelessness. Your contribution supports:
Safe shelter over the winter months
Access to health services, immigration and welfare advice, as well as a range of well-being programs
Job-readiness training and skills workshops
Access to food, clothing, and emergency support services
Advocacy for people experiencing homelessness in the community
Date of Ride: Thursday, 29th May to Saturday, 31st May 2025
Route: The cyclists will be riding across a scenic 100-mile coastal route, through many terrains and showcasing the resilience and determination of individuals who have fought to overcome homelessness. The itinerary is as follows:

Day 2 - Great Yarmouth - Cromer, 35.6 miles
