Unfortunately, societal pressures that affect mental health still disproportionally impact Black lives in Lambeth and Southwark. We feel passionately that the time to address Black mental health is long overdue.
Black River Counselling aims to remedy this, providing culturally specific counselling for the Black Community, by qualified Black counsellors and therapists.
We've been able to support 76 people so far, but we want to help many more. The service is massively oversubscribed with a waiting list of 85 people – and that's why we need your help. Every £300 raised will deliver 8 sessions of essential counselling for someone in need.
Black mental health matters and being able to talk to someone with insight into the Black experience can be crucial to mental wellbeing.
Here's what someone who used our service had to say:
In a desperate state, I frantically searched online for some help. I knew that sinking feeling and I didn't see myself coming out of it this time. Everything seemed so hopeless even though I still maintained a consistent 'outside face'. Black River helped me to accept my limitations rather than keep on trying to maintain a learnt behaviour of being in control and always available to others. Thanks to Alison I am more aware of my inner, private and ego selves and the way dealing with daily challenges cause inner conflict. Most important was being facilitated through the six weeks by someone I could identify with. This really helped me to accept my authentic self. Whilst I still have my downs, I feel I have a better perspective so thanks for providing this platform.
