Blood Bikes Wales provides a completely free courier service for the NHS, relying solely on volunteers and donations to offer this service. Volunteers transport blood, drugs, human tissue and other medical requirements between hospitals, blood transfusion banks and other medical facilities to assist the National Health Service.
Blood Bikes Wales operates in eight locally organised groups. There are two which, together, cover the extent of the St Asaph Diocese: Wrexham Group, which serves northeast Wales and Powys Group, which serves mid Wales.
In addition, the Groups’ riders carry mother’s milk from the NHS Milk Banks in Chester, Birmingham and Bristol to their local hospitals and, in an emergency, direct to nursing mothers at home.
This service is provided year-round and entirely free of charge, enabling the NHS to save money that would otherwise be spent on courier services and to use those savings for the benefit of its patients.
