Story
In 2019 a metal detectorist unearthed a hoard of gold coins on land near Blythburgh. These nineteen rare Iron Age gold coins are among some of the earliest coins to be produced in Britain and are thought to date from between 60BC and around 25AD.
This collection gives Halesworth and District Museum a chance to own some fascinating and unique coins of national importance, but we need your help to achieve this.
The coins have been valued at £16,000 which gives our Museum a huge challenge to raise the sum to retain and display them in the area in which they were buried some 2,000 years ago. These coins give us a glimpse into a strange, very different and largely unknown past. However the significance to our local history and the fact that there are two coins, so far unknown to experts, makes this a challenge worthwhile.
