Story

WE TURN OUR PASSION INTO ACTION

Our passion for reducing cancer inequalities and drive to improve cancer and related health services for patients and carers are rooted in our founders personal and professional experience. She lost her mother and twin sister to cancer, and after 26 years of experience in NHS cancer services, was also diagnosed with cancer in 2015. As a charitable organisation since 2009, we have been motivated to preserve the health and wellbeing of people in particular, but not exclusively from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and low-income communities living with or affected by cancer.

Our ethos is embedded in our name, BMe Against Cancer. BMe subliminally denotes Black & Minority Ethnic (BME) however, the message it conveys is, Put yourself in my place against cancer. Because of our passion:

WE GOT INVOLVED! | Paula, who was diagnosed with cancer of the liver, was given 18 months to live, more than 11 years ago. Today, she is the co-founder and chair, and a cancer support advocate of Sistas Against Cancer Support Group.

WE CALLED TO ACTION! | When in 2012 UK evidence proved that black men were twice as likely to die from prostate cancer, we authored two reports entitled Hear Me Now! The uncomfortable reality of prostate cancer in Black and African-Caribbean men. This led to a National Campaign to improve screening for high-risk groups and early-detection, prostate cancer community clinics.

WE EMPOWER! | By providing culturally appropriate advice and information, patients can make life-saving decisions about therapies, prescriptions, and adequate care and support.

BECAUSE WE KNOW! | 1 in 4 black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer (1 in 8 white men). Non-hormonal triple-negative breast cancer is more likely in younger Black African, Black African Caribbean and some Asian women. Bowel cancer is increasing in the Black UK and Asian UK population, Thousands of referrals to NHS cancer services are delayed as a result of the pandemic.

WE CAN NOT IGNORE! | The urgent needs and increasing number of requests for cancer-related advocacy and support.

WE HAVE THE PASSION! Say, "B'Me Against Cancer!" Donate and we will take action!
