Story
We urgently need your support to transform an animal shelter in crisis
Every day, animals at this shelter in Borneo are struggling. They have reached breaking point, with overcrowded cages, limited resources, and unsafe conditions. When they reached out to us here at IAPWA, we knew we urgently had to help. But as a small charity ourselves, we simply can't do it without your support.
The shelter are working incredibly hard for the animals, but they just don’t have the resources to meet the demand. Sick and injured animals are brought to them from the streets. Tiny puppies and kittens are abandoned outside their gates. And when members of the community complain about strays, local authorities deliver them straight to the shelter - regardless of capacity.
Dogs and cats are crammed into tiny cages out of necessity, and most are not yet neutered or vaccinated. The shelter is also plagued by rats and snakes, leaving staff and animals in danger. The current environment is unsafe, unsanitary, and heart-breaking for everyone involved.
We urgently need to raise £18,960 by the end of February 2026 to complete phase one of the transformation, giving these animals the space, dignity and care they deserve.
This is part of a wider project to improve the lives of Borneo’s dogs and cats, delivering long-lasting and life-changing results for animals who desperately need help.
What we will do now
We’ve launched a 3-phase rescue and recovery plan for the shelter. This is phase one, starting now with their most urgent needs.
We need your help to raise £18,960, to:
- Remove rubbish and clear vegetation to create a safe and sanitary environment. Implement long-term waste management procedures and environmental services, including sewerage and drainage, to ensure the safety of staff and animals.
- Purchase vital equipment such as fridges, freezers, washing machines, gas stoves, storage cabinets and pest-proof containers.
- Neuter the 800 dogs at the shelter to prevent continued breeding.
- Support campaign logistics and co-ordination on the ground, and make preparations for phase 2.
These are our vital foundations. Without these first steps, nothing else is possible.

Next steps
After this initial clean-up and neutering programme, we will begin the next phases of redeveloping this shelter and building a better future for Borneo's cats and dogs. You can find out more about this on our website.

Please help today
At IAPWA we have the expertise, connections, passion and determination to make this happen. But our challenge is that we're a small charity, so we literally cannot do it without the support of people like you. We need your help now to stop the suffering as soon as possible. Every single donation, fundraiser, and share counts.
Thank you so much.
