Story

Who are we?

Clean Up the River Brent (CURB) was founded by Brent River Park Trustee, Ben Morris, in 2021. This growing army of volunteers, working with LAGER Can and other groups, have put in a huge effort to enhance the river, which runs from Barnet to Brent, removing up to 100 tonnes of rubbish, including 500 tyres and over 100 e-bikes, removing invasive plant species, and lobbying for better river health. CURB has built relationships with other volunteer groups throughout the catchment including the Dollis Brookers, Friends of the Welsh Harp, Friends of the Silk Stream, Local Action for Mutton Brook, and Friends of the Wealdstone Brook. We believe we are stronger together, representing the whole river.

Why are we raising funds?

The Brent is beautiful but badly polluted, and we need your help to do something about it. We are already testing for Ammonia and Phosphate, and we already have our pioneering homemade Brent Monitoring Network, providing live data on water conductivity. We already know there are a number of sewage outlets that dispose of waste directly in to the water. Road run-off and misconnections from homes and businesses also get washed in to this precious and vital ecosystem.

But we want to know exactly what's in the water and where it's coming from.

We are concerned that animals and humans who come into contact with the river are in danger.

We want to break the silence around the true nature of what's in the water, and the threat that poses to our environment.

To do this, we need access to high quality, professional, laboratory testing. We want to understand the pollutants, to be able to pinpoint where they are entering the river. With your help, we can find out what is in the river, and then demand that the polluters pay. We want the kind of data that, if necessary, can stand up in court.

This information doesn't come for free. The tests we want to deploy, once we have identified a problem, will cost over £20 each.

Please help us stand up for this vital waterway, and hold those who are damaging it to account.

Thank you for donating today. Please do share this page with your river and nature loving friends and family! Your generosity is hugely appreciated.
