Story
“Bromley Mencap has been a lifeline for my family.” - Sarah, James' Mum
When Sarah’s son James was born, he spent the first years of his life in and out of hospital with a serious heart condition. Doctors later believed he had learning disability as a result.
Sarah was navigating this alone, exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsure where to turn.
Like many parents of children with additional needs, she faced something no one prepares you for. The isolation. The uncertainty. The constant fight to get the right support.
That’s when she found Bromley Mencap.
At first, it was simple support - respite care for a few hours, giving Sarah the chance to rest and spend time with her family, knowing James was safe and cared for. But it quickly became so much more.
Through services like Family Futures, families like Sarah’s can access early support, guidance and connection before challenges reach crisis point.
Over time, James began to build confidence, friendships and independence through activities, clubs and day services. Today, at 31, he is a sociable and much-loved member of his community, still supported by Bromley Mencap.
For Sarah, the impact went beyond her son:
- She found a community of parents who understood
- She built lasting friendships
- She gained the confidence to support others
What started as support became a network. A lifeline. A place to belong.
“If I’ve needed help with anything, they have always been fantastic.”
But not every family can access this support when they need it.
That’s why we’re raising funds for Family Futures—to reach more families earlier, provide the right support at the right time, and ensure no one feels alone.
Your donation could help:
A parent access guidance when they don’t know where to turn
A child build confidence through inclusive activities
A family feel less isolated and more supported
