Bristol Welcomes Refugees

Rising hostility is making refugees and asylum seekers feel unsafe and unwelcome. Now, more than ever, they need our specialist support and safe spaces. Help us to provide essential support and show refugees that they are welcome in our city.

Bristol Refugee Rights supports refugees and asylum seekers to feel safe and welcome, live free of poverty, and access their rights. We want a society where refugees, asylum seekers and migrants are welcomed. A society where everyone’s rights and entitlements are respected.

Story

"Thank you for being a light in the dark. Thank you for reminding us that we are not invisible."

We need to raise £10,000 so that we can provide essential support to help refugees and asylum seekers feel safe and welcome in Bristol. Your support is currently more important than ever.

Your donations will provide people seeking asylum with:

1) A Warm Welcome: People seeking asylum will access a friendly and safe environment where they can play games, make art, and enjoy warm community meals.

2) A Strong Community: People seeking asylum will integrate into the local community as they can practice English and access volunteering opportunities.

3) A Safe Future: People seeking asylum will access empowering advice and information on how to stay safe and rebuild their lives.

We need your help!

£10 will buy a hot meal for a family of 5

£20 will provide an asylum seeker with wellbeing support following recent anti-migrant protests

£25 will enable 5 asylum seekers to safely travel to volunteer

£50 will provide emergency support for a family experiencing homelessness

We especially welcome monthly donations because they help us plan for the future.

Javed's story

"I have hope because I know someone is behind us."

When we met Javed and his family, they had been living in an overcrowded hotel for 2 years. With little information or guidance, they struggled to understand the asylum system, access medical care, and ensure their children could go to school. The cramped living conditions and long wait took a heavy toll on their mental health.

Our Outreach Advice Team became a vital source of support. They helped the family to register with a GP, secured school places for the children, and gave Javed opportunities to volunteer, helping him feel part of a community - "I feel hope, we were helpless those days, but every time we were worried, you helped.”

The family’s health conditions meant that it was not safe for them to live in the hotel, however the Home Office refused their application to be moved to more suitable housing. Our team successfully worked with doctors, schools, and mental health services so that the family could move to more appropriate housing to wait for their asylum claim decision.

Now living in stable housing, Javed feels more confident and connected. His son is excelling at college, and his daughter has moved into sixth form. “I tell everyone, go to BRR outreach - they will listen,” he says. The family continues to rebuild their lives with renewed independence, health, and hope.

“When I came to the hotel, there was no guidance. It was very helpful when your people came. Every time, no matter race, religion, or nationality, you helped us. I will never forget your people." - Javed

Your donation will help us to provide this support to people in similar situations to Jared. Thank you.
