Fundraising for Public Safety Signage on Morecambe Bay

We trialled some Tide Time and Quicksand Safety signage at Silverdale last Summer. This was a success! We need to continue our vital work and place more signs around the Bay. These inform visitors/locals by scanning a QR Code. Lives have been saved.

We are a quicksand, snow & flood Rescue Team that works with Cumbria Fire & Rescue, Lancashire Fire & Rescue, Cumbria & Lancashire Police, North West Ambulance Service and HM Coastguard using Hagglund BV206 all terrain vehicles & 4x4's in the Morecambe Bay, Lake District and North Lancashire area.

Story

I’m sure everyone will agree that there are lots of signs around the Bay which warn of Quicksand and Fast moving Tides, and in Arnside the SIREN goes off warning people within earshot of the incoming tide, but we still get lots of emergency call-outs to people who are either visitors to the area or who have simply not checked or have the wrong information.

WE HAVE BEEN QUIET ABOUT THIS UNTIL NOW - BUT NOW WE KNOW ITS WORKING - NUMBERS ARE DROPPING - FEED BACK IS REALLY POSITIVE

Last summer we came up with and trialled a special sign prompting people who are about to venture out for a walk on the Bay to take a moment and get the up-to-date tide times, before they set foot.

On our small but powerful little signs there are two QR Codes, the one on the left takes you directly to the BBC Heysham tide times and tells you when high water is expected for the Bay, the one on the right is a short information video we’ve made on what to do if you get stuck in the soft sand ( the clear message here is do not delay in dialling 999 and asking for the Coastguard, sit down spread your weight out don’t panic) all you need to get this information is simply pass the Camara of your mobile phone over the QR code one at a time and click on the link.

We know that the tide times in any form are not minute accurate, and there are a number of influences such as the wind speed and direction, and type of tide (Spring or Neap) which have an effect along with just where about on the bay you are at any given time. But never before (that we are aware) have you been able to pass your smart phone over the QR code and immediately get the high-water time in the most popular areas of access around the Bay.

So far, we have signs on Silverdale Shore thanks to Tony, we have a sign by the seat at Cove House entrance Silverdale, and we have signs at almost every entrance to the bay from Grange Prom and so far, just one at Sandside.

We need more funding to continue producing these great safety warning signs.
